Excitement in the air…

Lizzie continues to have a fever and she’s still in isolation but the C.diff infection (world’s nastiest stomach funk) has become more manageable. There is now the concern fluid may have built up around her heart and might be the cause of her continuing fever. All the other cultures have come back clear.  On another note, Lizzie is making progress with her lung function!  She has really come a long way and there is excitement in the air! Keep praying she continues to tolerate the ventilator changes as they wean her.  If she does well today BIG things could be happening soon.

To be able to hold her and hear her sweet little voice is something I literally ache for. Seriously, like a real live ache.   On Monday I was so discouraged.  From fevers, to isolation, to just being plain old exhausted, it seemed like this would never end.  During rounds that morning Lizzie’s surgeon looked at me, obviously aware of my defeat, and asked “Tell me, where was she last Monday?”  I looked up, grinned, and said “Thank you”.  He was absolutely correct.  Compared to last Monday, Lizzie had made amazing strides from a respiratory stand point.  Last Monday the doctors weren’t so hopeful and now they were, even with the newest setbacks.  So I squared my shoulders and put my big girl panties on.

That night I sat next to Lizzie’s bed, singing and reading and talking to her. It was dark and as quiet as an intensive care room could be.  She cracked her little eyes, raised her eyebrows, and looked at me.  Really looked at me.   She then reached for my hair and gently touched it with the back of her hand, the same way she did the very first time we ever met.  I am so thankful for that precious moment and look forward to so many more to come.

Please keep praying for Little Miss Lizzie, God is at work here.
